Wireless Problem

I have hooked up 2 other networks at other places and both have run great for a longtime. I have a linksys router I hooked up for this new network. All is well for a couple of days but then it shuts us out. The main computer is hooked up with a cable modem, the wiring is fine, the internet stops working even on the main computer and the message of "Little or NO Connectivity" appears on the network icon so there is no internet on the main computer and the 2 other computers(laptop) are shut out.

Guy I had come over to troubleshoot fix it(then it did not work again after a day or two) says it's a linksys problem and that I should get a Net Gear Router that is much better........I don't buy it, am I wrong? I also have a DLink router that I tried and the same thing happens....I figure it's a setting problem on the main computer but can't figure it out!!! Any ideas, is a NetGear Router really going to make a difference? thanks for the help.

Netgear isn't the answer. Probably all the guy knew how to work on. If you are using a cable modem, is it also acting as a router? Could be a conflict between the modem and router. Modems sometimes need to be set as a bridge to the wireless router.

My first questions would be:
Did the network ever work?
What exactly did you add?
Who is your ISP?
What kind of modem?
describe your network layout (ie. modem > router > switch> PC)

thx NoP, yes the thing I found strange is the network will work for a a day or 2 then shit us out, this has happened 3-4 times. Recently it actually worked for a week before everything went down.

ISP: Cox Communications

Motorola SB5120 Surfboard Cable Modem

I added a wireless router(ie. I tried a Linksys and a Dlink and the same thing happens)

**I agree with you that it's probably a conflict with the modem and router**

Make sure that the right USB drivers are loaded and that there isn't a firmware upgrade for the wireless router. I would take out the router and hook the main pc to the cable modem and make sure it is not a problem on the cable side. Add router back and If you can get it up and running do ipconfig /all from a command line and note everthing under the Physical address ( especially ip address ,default gateway,DHCP server, and DNS server addresses) all the way down to Lease expires. When the problem starts do ip config again and compare. Two settings to check on your wireless router are the time for the DHCP lease, because you say it is ok for a day and then goes and most are set to expire, and also the security settings. Disable security long enough to test that whatever you are using isn't causing the problem.

Your cable modem, the Motorola SB5120 Surfboard Cable Modem
is considered by many to be the "gold standard" of cable modems. It should be able work with Dlink or linksys. router. You could also try factory reset and start fresh with configuring

Never got back to you NoP, wanted to thank you for the help and patience for helping me with the trouble I had. Basically did a factory reset and did not set as many security parameters as before, all is well now so thanks again.:aktion033:drink:
